Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! I believe that education offers choice, effort creates ability and kindness matters. With education, students can choose their destiny. With effort and belief in themselves, students achieve that education. With kindness and respect, students can successfully collaborate with others thus achieving even more.
At Rudecinda Dodson Middle School, we strive to ensure all students acquire academic skills and character traits necessary for high school, college acceptance and career readiness. We provide a rigorous academic program that challenges students to move along their educational pathway by deepening their conceptual understanding through real-world applications, evidence-based writing, and critical thinking skills. We also promote the importance of attitude and effort, collaboration, and accountability for their own learning.
The dedicated Dodson staff hold themselves to a high level of involvement and responsibility for the success of all our students. They set an example of true collaboration and are lifelong learners themselves. Teachers study their craft, setting high expectations to increase student achievement each year.
At the same time, we continue to offer a robust selection of enrichment opportunities that includes Ceramics, Choir, Computer Technology, Culinary Arts, Dance, Digital Imaging, Film Appreciation, Film Production, Horticulture, Instrumental Music, Journalism, Leadership, Robotics, Spanish, Speech, Theater, Visual Arts, and Yearbook. We also offer AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a program that uses proven strategies to prepare students for success in high school, college, and beyond.
The Dodson family is proud of our accomplishments. We are a California Gold Ribbon School, Title 1 Academic Achieving School, Magnet Schools of America - School of Excellence Recipient, and WASC Accredited.
Students, I encourage you to be courageous enough to try. Try even if it means you will fail. When you make mistakes, believe you can correct your mistakes, your brain actually grows. Have that courage and determination to make and correct your mistakes.
Parents, I invite you to stay connected, just as you are doing right now. Continue to frequent our website for events and important updates. Parents, check in daily on your child’s progress using the LAUSD Parent Portal. Grades are updated regularly. Keep the communication open. Also, teachers have a dedicated conference period, you can call our counseling office to schedule an appointment or email them directly.
Let’s work together as a community to ensure that every student matriculates from 8th grade prepared for high school success as well as the 21st century.

Why Dodson?

Dodson Middle School is a place of rigor. What does this mean? It's an educational institution that provides learning opportunities for students both in and out of the classroom that challenges their thinking in new and interesting ways. Students are encouraged towards a sophisticated understanding of fundamental ideas and are driven by curiosity to discover what they don't know.

Dodson Middle School is a 6-8 "Gifted-High Ability Magnet" campus serving over 1,800 students.  Dodson is a Title I school and scored the highest of any middle school in ESC South with an API score of 854 in 2013. Dodson Middle School students will acquire academic skills and character traits that will prepare them for higher education as well as the 21st Century job market. All students will know how to work as a team to apply problem-solving skills and persevere through tasks and situations. Dodson students will respect and support others in the learning process and non-academic situations. Dodson’s staff, students, parents and community will communicate and work together to reach its goals and to support all members of its community.

There will be a school-wide focus on Common Core Writing throughout the various disciplines. As a means of building a foundation for college and career readiness, students will be able to construct writings that support opinions, demonstrate an understanding of the subjects they are studying, and convey real and imagined experiences and events.

To meet the goal of proficiency for all Dodson students, grade-level Math and ELA teams will participate in lesson studies throughout school years 2013-2016. This study will consist of a create-plan-deliver-reflect-refine/revise cycle. Team of grade-level content specific teachers will create a lesson plan aligned to the common core state standards, deliver the plan, give the assessment, reflect on the student work and instructional processes, and finally, determine next steps for instruction.
