Dodson Middle School AVID
The AVID Program is offered at Dodson Middle School for selected students in grades 6th through 8th. The program prepares students in the academic middle for admission to a four-year college or university. Students take an AVID Elective course and core classes that provides them with the skills needed to be successful in advancing academically with the ultimate goal of attending college.
For more than 30 years, AVID has been instrumental in preparing students for success in higher education. The main component is the AVID Elective class, which supports students as they challenge themselves in their rigorous core classes.
Students in the AVID Elective are taught study skills, note-taking, time management, writing skills, and research skills, while being immersed in a college-going culture. The AVID Elective class also includes tutoring sessions that are led by college students and Grade 8 high achieving students. The tutoring sessions provide support for success in the academically rigorous curriculum.
Additionally, the AVID Elective class provides access to information about colleges and universities through field trips, guest speakers, and college tutors. Students selected to be in AVID are those who are motivated to do well and who are serious about their academic future. Selection will be based on grades, state test results, and an interview.
Interested students and parents are asked to complete the AVID Student Application. So as to better know the student applicant, a request for family information and short answers are part of the application. The application is found under Resources on the Forms and Resources page.
Once accepted into Dodson's AVID program, students who reside outside of Dodson’s feeder school(s) area must also apply for an Intra-District permit which does not include bus transportation. The permit application will be provided as part of the AVID acceptance package.
AVID Curriculum
The college readiness curriculum is driven by the WICOR method: writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading. Writing is an integral part of the program as in the future students will need to craft college applications, letters of recommendation, personal statements and college entrance essays. In eighth grade, AVID students are highly encouraged to take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) which is a precursor to the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) students take in high school.
College research is integral to the curriculum. The AVID team organizes two college visits per year. These visits are open to all AVID students. The AVID curriculum includes student research and presentations on diverse colleges.
AVID Faculty
One key to a successful AVID program is a site coordinator who works well with the faculty, staff, and tutors. The site coordinator and AVID elective teachers strive to meet the needs of the students by coordinating AVID methodology school wide, organizing the AVID curriculum and activities, and providing academic supports. The AVID team guide the students through the steps to academic success.
AVID Tutor
Tutors are essential to the success of the AVID elective class because they aid students in accessing rigorous curriculum.
The college tutors receive formal training and as a result are well-qualified and excellent role models for students in the AVID program. The tutors serve as mentors to small groups of students in each AVID class.Through this mentor relationship, the tutors provide one-on-one monitoring and coaching of each student. Additionally, AVID elective teachers and tutors also offer study hall the week before semester finals.
AVID Parent
AVID parents support their student by encouraging academic achievement. They participate in site meetings, as well as maintain regular contact with the elective and content teachers and the AVID coordinator. AVID family events draw many parents and students to participate.
AVID Site Team
AVID elective teachers, administrators, counselors, content teachers, students, parents, and tutors make up the site team. The site team has scheduled meetings to evaluate and make improvements to the AVID program. Additionally, the team works to ensure annual certification.
AVID Student Support
The AVID elective teacher and counselor monitor the students', ensuring that every student meets the culmination requirements, are on track to culminate, and are preparing to take Advanced Placement (AP) courses in high school.
